Book hotels online for Otira Hotel & Village at NewZealandIn1.com - your one stop shop for accommodation in Otira and for hotels in New Zealand
The Hennah family moved here from Auckland 9 years ago with the intention of revitalising a little piece of New Zealand history. The hotel was closed and the village houses mainly abandoned. Those who still lived here had to travel many miles to get the basics of life.
Now the hotel is doing well, especially the tearooms/shop and most of the houses are occupied.
Hennah Holdings Limited is a family business that supplies accommodation from hotel rooms to a weekend in a 1920's character home or long term rental.
Otira is a tiny hamlet nestled in the mountains of Arthurs Pass National Park. The hotel was built in the 1860's as a coach stop and the village dates from 1923 when the Otira railway tunnel was opened. In its heyday, Otira was home to some six hundred workers and their families before it was sold in 1989 to private enterprise.
Far from the bustle of the cities, Otira is a quiet oasis of magnificent mountains, native bush with the call of the tui, rushing wings of the native wood pigeon (kereru) occasional kea and plentiful weka.
