In 1870 Auckland had 91 licensed hotels that served a population of 13,000. This worked out as a ratio of one hotel for every 143 people. Paddy Gleeson, who was born in Tipperary, Ireland was the proud owner of ten of these hotels, including The Albion. The Albion, built in 1873, is the last of these venues to still be operating as a complete hotel.
